Christoph Herbert

Christoph Herbert (herbert@tsc.upc.edu) is a Ph.D. student with an INPhINIT La Caixa fellowship in the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia since November 2018.

Born in Marktheidenfeld, Germany, Christoph Herbert graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics at RWTH Aachen in 2016. In August 2018, he received a Joint Master Diploma in Applied Geophysics with Distinction from TU Delft, ETH Zurich, and RWTH Aachen. For his Master thesis, he worked on the extraction of subsurface heterogeneity from geophysical measurements using unsupervised learning algorithms.

Christoph pursues the development of methods and applications to infer geophysical parameters from Earth observation data. His interests are ranging from the use of SMOS mission products for estimating subsurface soil moisture and the modeling of Arctic sea ice properties. Current work encompasses the segmentation of sea ice to improve the availability and accuracy of sea ice retrievals including thickness and concentration. He is part of the MOSAiC expedition in collaboration with the Barcelona Expert Center.
